Inside SVG: Business Development Specialists
Looking for a career change but don’t know where to start? Spring Venture Group has the role for you. Our Business Development Specialists guide our clients through the process of finding the right insurance policy—and despite what that sounds like—they have a great time doing it. No experience is necessary, so it’s perfect for anyone ready to learn something new and join an awesome team.
We caught up with two of our specialists—Taylor and Jake—to find out what makes the job perfect for them.
What’s the best part about working here?
Taylor: I feel really passionately about helping people every day. And we’re the first voice our customers hear when they call us, so we get to set the standard for what working with us is all about. Insurance is really stressful and complicated for people, so it’s a great feeling to help our clients through the process, save money, and find a solution that they actually need. They’re usually really thankful and grateful for your help, so it’s pretty rewarding work.
Besides that, the BDS team is like one big family—which sounds really cheesy but it’s absolutely true. I don’t know if I’d love this job as much as I do if it weren’t for the other people who work here. We’re all really supportive of each other and help each other through the ups and downs. We go out for happy hour together all the time and do a lot of philanthropy work as a team. The support I get here is unlike any other place I’ve been and that’s really important to me.
Jake: Like Taylor said, we’re a really social team. It’s a really nice laid-back atmosphere and that makes the job so much better. And I love that this job isn’t like a typical sales role either. We take a consultative approach to finding solutions for our clients, so that means I spend most of my time educating people about health insurance—not trying to make a sale.
I actually started out as a sales agent, and switched to the BDS team because I knew I loved helping people, but didn’t like the pressure of closing. We just get to help people figure out the right policy for them and that’s perfect for me. But on the other hand, if you’re interested in sales and don’t have any experience, the BDS role is a great place to get started and learn about our process. A lot of our team move on to join the sales team, so there’s plenty of opportunity to move up if you want.
What are the biggest challenges of your job?
Jake: Helping different people through the same process over and over can get a little repetitive, so it’s important for me to find ways to have fun with it every day. I try to come in with a fresh mind and find ways to challenge myself. Having a really social and supportive team helps too, because we all understand the ups and downs. I know if I’m having a tough day I have that support system behind me to help me push through it.
Taylor: I had zero sales or insurance experience before I got here, so there was a lot to learn when I got started. But you get a full week of training with managers who have all been on the BDS team doing what they’re training you to do, so by the time I got on the phones I felt much more confident. SVG has an incredible commitment to developing people that I haven’t seen anywhere else. No matter what your background or experience, there’s a place for you to learn and grow here for sure.
What were you doing before SVG?
Jake: I was a project manager helping develop business for about six months before I started as a sales agent here. Besides that, I had no sales experience or training, and the place I was working hardly trained us at all. It was really daunting to approach places trying to push a product.
Sales here is the total opposite of that. It’s not up to us to find leads or train ourselves. Everyone who starts gets trained in the industry and our proven approach, so everyone is given every opportunity to succeed. The support here is truly awesome. When I knew being an agent wasn’t for me, I knew I wanted to stay at SVG and they helped me find a role that was a better fit. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to stay at SVG.
Taylor: I started here my first year out of college at Mizzou, where I majored in Health Science and Nutrition and Wellness. I was really nervous to leave school and start working because it seemed like such a huge leap for me. I knew I wanted to join a company where I could be around a lot of people I felt I could get along with and were close to my age, and also had plenty of development opportunities.
When I was offered this job I was hesitant to say yes because I had zero experience and I was worried I wasn’t going to be any good at it. But once I got started I knew it was the right fit. Being here is like being with a big family who are also my friends. And the training is amazing, like I mentioned. My first week was just training, and there’s a ton of hands-on practice before you actually start talking to clients, so by the time I got started I was totally ready to go.
If you’re interested in starting a new career, SVG is a great place to be.
