Brian tells us what makes a career at SVG unlike any other

Before SVG I had no sales experience—I was working in cancer research after college. My friend who was working at SVG suggested I apply to be an Inside Sales advisor, so I did. I was pretty leery of sales, just because it can get a bad reputation for being a way to trick people into buying something.

It was pretty clear once I got started that SVG is different. They take an ethical approach to sales, which means we provide real value to our clients. That makes my job easier since I know I can always find them a solution they need at the lowest price available. I never feel like I’m selling a product—just providing a service.

What would you tell someone who’s interested in starting a career in sales?

Just try it—there’s no other way to know. You’ll find out pretty quick if you’re a good fit or not. Anyone who is self-motivated, entrepreneurial, and likes to be compensated for their efforts will do well. I’ve learned the two most important qualities that have helped me succeed here are empathy and confidence.

It’s key to remember you’re dealing with a real human being at the other end of the line and I try to approach it like I’m sitting across a table from them. It also helps that I’m confident in what we’re selling, and that I know I’m the right person to help them. It feels less like sales and more like helping and educating people through a process.

The right atmosphere also makes a huge difference. I don’t think I’d be in sales if I hadn’t started my career at SVG. Everything they do here is an investment in their people. They give you every tool you need to do your best—training, knowledge, coaching, quality leads. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been in sales, everyone has access to the exact same resources to be successful.

What’s the best part of your job?

I feel like I’m my own boss—but I also have the support of an awesome team behind me, so it’s truly the best of both worlds. I like that I’m in charge of my own compensation, so it’s really up to me to be successful here. SVG has a really unique blend of autonomy and collaboration that I don’t think exists anywhere else.

There’s also a ton of room for growth here. I’ve been here ten months and was just recently made a sales coach. I’d love to have my own team within another year and eventually become a director. As a coach, I love seeing new agents make their first sale and helping them work through their own processes and make improvements. I love what I do here, but I love where I get to do it even more. I want to inspire that same feeling in everyone who joins our team, and I think moving up would let me do it even more.
